Project for students registered for 4 hours
Only graduate students may register this class for 4 hours.
Students registered for 4 hours
will need to perform a project that is worth 25% of their final grade.
The project will consist of primarily two components:
1. A survey, and
2. A short research project.
Ideally, the research project will be related to the survey you perform.
The project may be analytical, simulation-based, or
experimental.
GUIDELINES for final report
The report format should be similar to a typical paper,
containing introduction, background and related work
overview or survey (you may use material from the survey
submitted previously), problem description, your solution,
results, and a discussion of the results, and a list of references. There is no specific length
requirement for the final report. Please submit a printout of
the report to Nitin Vaidya by April 28, 2008.
Schedule
-
Identify a survey topic by January 31, 2008, after
consulting with the instructor.
-
Complete the survey by February 21, 2008,
and submit a write-up based on the survey (3 pages, not counting
the references, in 12 point font, single spaced). The survey
should be based on at least 6 papers chosen in consultation with
the instructor.
-
By March 4, 2008, identify a research problem
after consulting with the instructor,
and submit a write-up (1 page) describing the
problem, motivation behind the problem,
and an outline of planned work.
- By April 1, meet the instructor at least once to provide an
update
on your progress (particularly, any solution you may have
identified for the chosen problem, and the progress on its
evaluation).
-
By April 28, 2008, complete the work on the project,
and submit a report describing your work.
The students may be asked to make a short
presentation based on their work.
